Cycling, cooking and games

Can passions be a driving force in a career? For many business leaders, like Mateusz Papaj, hobbies are not only a way to relax, but also to build relationships and a common language with clients. Find out how cycling trails, culinary experimentation or gaming influence motivation, work attitudes and professional relationships.

Do your passions, such as cycling or cooking, help you build relationships with your customers?

People love to talk about themselves – just ask them about their passions. To be modest, I am interested in many things, which makes it easy for me to find a common language with new people I meet. I never treat managers like ‘clients’. – For me, business is a natural consequence of a good relationship. The speed with which new people open can sometimes be surprising.

What motivates you most to be successful at work?

Salary, bonus, and commission – that is what drives me. Every day I think about a new bike, an extra drone, or a set of Philipiak pots.

What excites you most about mountain singletrack?

Adrenaline and real danger, combined with nature and beautiful views, all fuelled by intense physical exertion. Plus, the feeling of being part of a small group of people who love this type of recreation.

Endurance, determination, and the ability to enjoy the journey, not just the destination. We should celebrate every hill we climb, both on the road and in life.

Do you have a cycling dream?

I would like to be a professional rally racer, sponsored by Red Bull, with half of Poland watching my exploits! Now, however, I am concentrating on ‘rallying’ IT solutions.

What skills do you find useful in everyday life?

Which route would you recommend to anyone who wants to try mountain biking?

I would recommend the single trails in Bardo, such as the Klodzko Loop, Łaszczowa, Hrabiowska or Różańcowe Wzgórze. Google Maps does not work there, so it is worth remembering how to read maps attached to trees. If you live in Wroclaw, I recommend the closer single track in Kotowice – perfect for a warm-up.

What are your favourite shots in films and what effects do you try to achieve?

I shoot spontaneously, with a lot of creativity. My films are dominated by wide shots and first-person perspectives. Dynamic editing synchronised with catchy music is key.

What dishes do you like to cook?

If I had to choose one dish for life, it would be burgers – I often experiment with toppings like fried pineapple or caramelised pear.

Do you have any culinary achievements you would like to brag about?

I once added a large amount of chilli to a Bolognese sauce instead of smoked paprika. The trick was to eat it!

What genres of games interest you the most?

I love gangster and futuristic games, as well as classic online team shooters with friends. I rarely play horror games – the adrenaline is great, but then I must turn on all the lights in the house!

Do you prefer to play solo or online?

I like the hybrid model. I like the organic online competition, but after a few interventions from the neighbours, I switch to quieter role-playing games.
